Food Technology Assessment

Overview

Emerging technology has various influences in our modern life. Food technology is no exception. It includes agricultural chemicals, food additives, and genetically modified foods. Among new technologies currently under development are cloning and nanotechnology. The main research objectives of this research unit are 1) how such applications of technology to food are assessed in Japan, and 2) whether science and technology applied to food are assessed comprehensively, globally and systematically, taking into consideration various social effects (social risks and benefits as well as physical risks) from their early stages on society overall. This unit also considers the institutional analysis of international organizations and global food safety standards in general.

Activities

With an aim to explore future challenges in Technology Assessment (TA) relating to food safety in Japan, the application of nanotechnology to food.is chosen as a specific case for consideration.
