Subject: The Future of Space Activities in the Asia Pacific Region
Hosted by: Policy Alternatives Research Institute (PARI), the University of Tokyo
Cooperated by: National Institute of Advanced Studies(NIAS), India

Background and Purpose of Workshop

Background
Today an increasing number of nations in the Asia Pacific region are using outer space with various purposes. Now in this region, many nations aspire to acquire indigenous space capability. Commercial space activities can also be seen in this region. Security needs are also major driver for space activities in many nations.
In this situation, under the umbrella of Space Policy and Law Network in Asia Pacific (SPLANAP), the University of Tokyo Policy Alternatives Research Institute (UoT/PARI) and National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) have started a joint research project to examine and prepare a report on space policies of Asian nations, including Japan, India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and many other emerging spacefaring nations in this region. As the first step of this project, UoT/PARI and NIAS started a comparative analysis of space policies of Japan and India, especially focusing on commonalities and uniqueness of space policy in the both nations.

Purposes of Workshop
The purposes of this workshop are to share the outcome of UoT/PARI-NIAS joint research on comparative analysis of space policies in Japan and India, and to extend the scope of this comparative research by including the viewpoints of other Asian nations such as China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and so on. In addition to Japan and India, experts from many other Asian nations will discuss the characteristics (commonalities and uniqueness) of space policy in their countries at this workshop. This will help find possible areas of future space cooperation in the Asia Pacific region.
