Goal

The goal of the workshops on Biomedical Innovation at UTokyo Policy Alternatives Research Institute, PARI, the University of Tokyo, is to activate public discussion on better public health and the economic growth benefits consequent on the rapid introduction of safer and more effective medical technologies, utilizing knowledge about international activities in this field.

Not only in Japan but worldwide, people lay great store by the promotion of innovation, especially in the medical sector. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure adequate public health faced with the transformation of medical needs in our aging society, the confusing complexities of an advanced information age, and a severe economic standstill. There are still numerous unmet and unsolved medical needs. Therefore, finding new beginnings in biomedical innovation is essential if we are to overcome the difficult public health issues that face the world.

PARI will hold workshops on biomedical innovation four times in 2012. We aim through our workshops to support and provoke public discussion on (1) creating faster and more effective avenues from new technologies/ideas to better medical services, (2) establishing a social infrastructure which would improve quality of life in an aging society through better and safer medical and other related services, (3) enhancing the public image of the medical industry and making that industry more competitive by promoting R&D investment from around the world.
