Energy Policy Roundtable 2012

New Thoughts and Perspectives for the Next Era of Energy

The Energy Policy Roundtable includes a series of seminars where we invite world-leading specialists in the energy policy field, including energy policymakers and researchers from the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. Based on our understanding of opinion in the international energy community, lecturers, and panel members consisting mainly of specialists at the University of Tokyo, will conduct discussions and exchange information. At the same time, we expect to provide opportunities for policymakers, researchers and practitioners in the energy field to build a global network.

For the 1st Energy Policy Roundtable 2012, to mark our commemoration we have invited as lecturer Dr. Fatih Birol, Chief Economist of the International Energy Agency (IEA) and responsible for the World Energy Outlook publication, to present an updated analysis of the future global energy situation, followed by comments and discussion by prominent panelists.

The global energy environment now seems to be entering a new phase with new challenges to policymaking: the rising impact of both geopolitical changes and the development of unconventional fuels, the surge in energy demand in emerging countries such as China, the growing importance of electricity and the building of cross-border networks.
In this transformed environment, we ask: What sort of energy policy should Japan adopt following the Fukushima nuclear accident?

We are looking forward to a strong attendance at this symposium.
