The nexus of international politics in climate change and water resource, from the perspective of security studies and SDGs
Summary
Climate Change Politics is gaining attention since the beginning of the 21st century, and research on this topic became important in the field of international politics and international relations. This research project will investigate international political nexus in terms of climate change and water resources with case studies of the Global South. The project consists of the following three parts.
Firstly, this research project will clarify how climate change gives stress on societies and politics, and how such stress causes social instability, resource acquisition competition, armed conflicts, and the increase of refugees and immigrants, and shed light on the political mechanism on climate change.
Secondly, this research project will consider how nations and grass-root societies conduct mitigation and adaptation for natural threat and will propose hypnosis of “Climate Change Resilience”.
Finally, this research project will discuss global governance with a combination of “Climate Security”, as a new form of national security, and SDGs, and consider political analysis.

Assistant Professor Kazuyo Hanai participated in the academic conference of “Asia-Africa, a New Axis of Knowledge” at University of Dal es Salaam, Tanzania, on 20-22th September 2018.
She gave presentations in two round tables and had fruitful discussions with scholars from Africa, Europe, and Asia. Also, she interviewed practitioners engaging in climate change measure in Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda.

Project Assistant Professor Nazia Hussain presented at the Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Kyoto University, on February 12, 2019.
The title of her presentation was “Scarcity and Contention in Cities in the Global South: A Perspective from Karachi”. She presented along with researchers from Kyoto University, Nagoya University, and University of Tokyo.

Project Assistant Professor Nazia Hussain conducted fieldwork in Manila, Philippines, in February and March 2019.
She interviewed multiple stakeholders engaged in delivery of water to residents of the city as well as visited informal settlements within and around the city peripheries. She also met professors and members of NGOs during this time.
