The 1st Biomedical Innovation Workshop 2012 Report
Biomedical Innovation Workshop 2012
A Vision for Global Regulatory Harmonization in Promoting Biomedical Innovation
We recognize the importance of regulatory global harmonization for biomedical innovation. For example, the U.S. has already taken initiatives through regulatory harmonization in biomedical innovation to provide safer and better medical products, having realized that since many products are imported based on foreign clinical trials it is therefore essential to look beyond U.S borders if the quality of imported products is to be ensured. The EU has also been sharing information to promote better pharmaceutical regulation. Turning to medical devices, the International Medical Device Regulators Forum was established in Feb. 2011, leading to the establishment of the Global Harmonization Task Force (GHTF).
At this 1st workshop Workshop on medical innovation, we invited Mr. Michael Gropp, one of the steering committee members of the GHTF, for ascertainingto help us uncover the implications of regulatory harmonization in biomedical innovation and to discussing issues facingin Japan. In addition to Mr. Gropp, we asked several professionals in from the medical device sectors to join the panel discussion, including Professor, Dr. Yoichiro Matsumoto, Vice President for of the University of Tokyo, and Director for of the Medical Innovation Division at the Cabinet Secretariat.
