The 4th Biomedical Innovation Workshop 2012 Report
Biomedical Innovation Workshop 2012
Healthcare and Innovation
- Toward Realization of Innovation in Clinical Practice -
This workshop follows the 3rd Workshop, and in it we mean to discuss necessary incentives for realizing biomedical innovation, especially in clinical practice. The 3rd Workshop dealt with incentives for non-clinical sectors, e.g., manufacturers, component parts suppliers and engineers, while in this 4th workshop we will target incentives for medical doctors and hospitals.
One of the big issues we hope to confront in this workshop is what kind of incentives will encourage biomedical innovation, in other words, how value-added, high quality medical products and technologies may be introduced into clinical practice to improve the quality of healthcare. As we know, biomedical innovation cannot be realized without a clinical application context, involving patients, physicians, and other medical practitioners. Entry to the clinical arena is the goal in the development of most medical products and technologies, from basic research to patent applications, clinical trials, market approvals and payment processes. However, what are the drivers for introducing new and valuable medical products and technologies in light of how physicians actually practice?
In this workshop, we will discuss incentives for innovation in Japanese clinical practice, with examples from the U.S. By discussing incentives for both the non-clinical and clinical sides of practice, we can find better pathways to realize effective and timely biomedical innovation.
This workshop has been planned through a collaboration between the School of Medicine, Washington University, St. Louis, and the Policy Alternatives Research Institute, the University of Tokyo. Washington University is one of the most prestigious universities in the U.S., boasting 22 Nobel Laureates since its establishment in 1853. Furthermore, its School of Medicine is annually ranked among the top 3 in the U.S. The quality of healthcare at the Barnes Jewish Hospital, one of its affiliated hospitals, meets the highest global standards.
For this collaborated workshop, we have invited two residents selected as Global Health Scholars and one instructor selected as a McDonnell Scholar to come to Tokyo. The topics they will address are ventricular assist devices, bone marrow transplants, and electronic health records.
