Workshop - What Fukushima nuclear disaster brought about in Asia?

Purpose

Severe accidents at Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station reignited public and political debates, and led to not only re-examination and improvements of institutional framework and their activities of nuclear safety regulation also revisiting about national policy for utilization of nuclear power both at home and abroad. In addition, multi-faceted risks with systemic nature are emerging and/or re-emerging in social, political and economic domains, because the use of nuclear power has been tightly and complexly interconnected with and interdependent on socio-economic activities both in home and abroad so far. Unforeseen consequences ripple through complex global system.

The main purpose of the Workshop is to better understand what Fukushima nuclear disaster brought about in Asian countries. In the Workshop, we have three keynote speeches from South Korea, Singapore and China. First is that what South Korea learned from Fukushima and how she would develop risk governance system for utilizing nuclear power. Second is that what kinds of arguments have occurred in public and political contexts of India after Fukushima nuclear disaster.　Third is also that what kinds of arguments have occurred in public and political contexts of China after the disaster.

In Panel session, we will discuss the following points; what kinds of risks could ripple or cascade over the world when a serious nuclear accident happens; how we should recognize implications of the cascading events and consequences; how we could deal with these emerging risks.
