GSDM Platform Seminar "Trend in Global Energy Supply and Demand, and Its Implications for Japan and Asia" Report
Three years after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident that followed, the environment surrounding global energy has substantially changed. The shale revolution is changing the supply and demand relationship in the energy market, and the market for renewable energy has expanded. Furthermore, geopolitics is globally changing, including in the Middle East as can be seen in the Arab Spring. Despite a growing uncertainty about the future of the global economy, there can be no doubt that the Asian region is likely to continue to lead the growth in the world economy and the expansion of energy demand.
Simultaneously, a debate is occurring regarding the energy policy in Japan, as shown by the government’s proposal for a “Basic Energy Plan.” It is obvious to all that as a country lacking natural resources, Japan must evaluate its energy challenges from a global perspective. Japan’s energy policy must be also realized in a manner that accompanies economic growth as it aims to pull out of a long period of deflation. This seminar will host Dr. Fatih Birol of the International Energy Agency (IEA) which focused on these aspects, namely energy and economic growth, in its most recent World Energy Outlook (WEO) 2013. Dr. Birol will give a keynote speech on the current state and future of global energy supply and demand, and on its implications for Japan and Asia, emphasizing on its structural changes. Through this talk, the program aims to deepen debate with experts at this university.

About the speaker
Dr. Fatih Birol is the Chief Economist and Director of Global Energy Economics at the International Energy Agency (IEA). He is responsible for the IEA’s agship publication, World Energy Outlook (WEO), which is recognized as the most authoritative source of strategic analysis of global energy markets. He is also the founder and chair of the IEA Energy Business Council, which provides a forum to enhance cooperation between the energy industry and energy policymakers, and he is recognized as one of the most influential persons in the field of energy according to Forbes magazine.
