The 3rd Energy Policy Roundtable 2012 Report
Energy Policy Roundtable 2012

Views from Outside on Japan's Energy Policy

The Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant accident and the electricity shortage that followed have forced us to rethink about energy issues. Energy is linked in a big transnational chain. It is essential to see energy issues in a global context. Energy Policy Roundtable provides an opportunity to discuss energy policies in Asia and Japan from an intra-industry and interdisciplinary perspective as well as in a global context. In the roundtable, panelists including keynote speakers, who are world-leading specialists, experts and researchers in the University of Tokyo discuss and exchange information, while at the same time expecting to provide opportunities for researchers, polilcy makers and practitioners in the energy field and people concerned in Japan to build a global network.

In the 1st Energy Policy Roundtable, an in-depth analysis of current and future energy issues was conducted from a global perspective. In the 2nd Roundtable, we deepened the discussion to focus on ASEAN perspectives on energy circumstances in Asian countries, which now lead the world in energy demand.

In the 3rd Roundtable, we will focus on Japan’s energy and energy policies. Professor Ulrike Schaede of The University California, San Diego, will give a keynote speech on Japan’s energy policies viewed from the United States.

Prof. Schaede is a leading expert in the United States on Japan’s economy, industry and business, and is expected to talk about reform in the energy industry and in policy, in terms of Japan’s economy and its entire domestic industry. In the panel discussion, we will discuss Japan’s future energy mix and energy industry frameworks, and with these in mind, consider basic directions in policy.
