Theme: Japan and Directions in World Energy Policy
The Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant accident and the electricity shortage that followed have forced us to rethink about energy issues. Energy is linked in a big transnational chain. It is essential to see energy issues in a global context. Energy Policy Roundtable provides an opportunity to discuss energy policies in Asia and Japan from an intra-industry and interdisciplinary perspective as well as in a global context. In the roundtable, panelists including keynote speakers, who are world-leading specialists, experts and researchers in the University of Tokyo discuss and exchange information, while at the same time expecting to provide opportunities for researchers, policy makers and practitioners in the energy field and people concerned in Japan to build a global network.
In the past five seminars of the Roundtable, in-depth analyses and active discussions were conducted on the current and future global energy situation, and on future policy implications, in light of the relationship between China and the rest of the world, particularly the ASEAN member states and Japan, keeping global energy issues centrally in mind.
In the 6th Roundtable, with a view to summarizing the discussions so far, we will examine changes in the global energy supply-demand structure, and discuss the future outlook and direction of Japan’s energy policy. This seminar is going to be the last of the Energy Policy Roundtable series that we have held over the past year. Dr. Fatih Birol, Chief Economist of the IEA, and responsible for its World Energy Outlook (WEO) publication will be invited as our keynote speaker. Dr. Birol made the keynote speech at the 1st Energy Policy Roundtable and recently released World Energy Outlook 2012. After the keynote speech, we will have a panel discussion.
