Ito International Research Center Symposium, The University of Tokyo

International Symposium on
Risk Governance of Science and Technology

Purpose

Now we are in a globally interconnected and interdependent society where science and technology play increasingly crucial roles. In this situation, multi-faceted risks with systemic nature are emerging and/or re-emerging in social, political and economic domains by increasing interconnectedness, social networking and fast-paced scientific and technological advancement. In order to enable societies to benefit from science and technology advancement while minimizing the negative consequences of the associated risks, we should pursue better risk governance based on interdisciplinary expertise and inclusive participation and collaboration.

The main purposes of the Symposium are twofold. First is to understand deeply commonalities and differences across different technologies and regions, and to identify the specific and cross-cutting issues and explore best practices for a better governance of emerging risks. Second is to provide an opportunity for networking young scholars and practitioners with divergent disciplines around the globe.

The Symposium is composed of an open session to the public and three sessions by limited experts.
